Day 3 - Faith for the Future

Posted by Michael O'Neal

“For we walk by faith, not by sight.” (2 Corinthians 5:7, ESV)

“Walk by faith” is a phrase that refers to a lifestyle of trusting God’s leadership.  True faith involves trusting Him for the future.  Last August (1 year ago), Carrie (my wife) and I sensed that God was leading us to adopt a child from Russia.  Right now, we’re playing the waiting game, and we have tried our best to trust God’s leadership throughout the process.  We could receive a phone call any day now, letting us know that they have a baby for us.  Will we get a phone call this week?  Next month?  Will it be in October or November?  Bottom line–we don’t know.  Meanwhile, we “walk by faith.”  God led us to this point.  Why would He stop leading us now?

Do you fear the future?  Are the uncertainties of life stealing your joy?  Are you waiting for God to answer a prayer or meet a need in your life?  The great news is that God knows and holds the future.  It is our privilege and responsibility to walk by faith.  Before you pray, think about this quote:

“Walking by sight is just this–’I believe in myself,’ whereas walking by faith is, ‘I believe in God.’” (Charles Spurgeon)

PRAYER:  “God, You are my faithful leader.  Only You know the future, and so I’m believing that You will always lead me to where I need to be.  I’m also believing that You will meet every need I have.  Help me to walk by faith today.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

POINT TO PONDER:  True faith involves trusting God for the future.

No doubt I can relate to this! Changing jobs recently, I felt that God had opened a door for me and it was up to me whether I would walk through it in faith or remain where I was, comfortable. I don’t know what the future holds, but I know God does and as long as I focus my life on walking with Him, He will lead me where I need to be.

“Why would he stop leading us now?” is so true. I know for me it seems to be a control issue about not wanting to let go. Society today tells us we can have anything, anyway, at anytime. We want to control the situation instead of turning it over to God and our faith. He did not bring us all this way just to simply drop us off. Just imagine if we turned it all over to him the abundance he would heep upon us.

I got off work a few hours early today, came home, began cooking dinner and turned on Oprah. She had several women on the show that are in their 30’s. The women were either flourishing with their lot in life or they were dying on the vine because they were not getting what they wanted or thought they deserved to get out of this life. I remembered a wise mentor of mine challenged me a few years ago in my “American mindset”. At the time I was single and found myself demanding from God my rights to have what I thought I deserved. My wise mentor reminded me that walking by faith means giving up our “rights” to have what we want out of life. Jesus never claimed any rights. He gave up all His rights to give us the right to Eternal Life!!! He has called us to walk by faith and allow Him to give us His best for our lives. I struggle everyday with this!!!
