Day 28 - Becoming More Like Jesus
And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. [29] For God knew his people in advance, and he chose them to become like his Son, so that his Son would be the firstborn, with many brothers and sisters. (Romans 8:28-29, NLT)
Michael has referenced this verse several times during our 40 Days of Faith and with good reason–it is the essence of faith. Too often we hear people around us (or maybe ourselves) ask why? Why is this happening to me? Why is that happening to them? Why do bad things happen to good people? This verse helps remind me at those times what real faith is all about. Real faith is about accepting what we can’t understand because we know there’s a bigger plan, a bigger purpose for our life. What this passage is trying to communicate to us is that if we call ourselves children of the Lord, He will use EVERY circumstance to make us better, to make us more like His Son. Without faith, it can be very easy to lose sight of God’s plan and purpose for our life.
I challenge you to commit this verse to memory and to hide it in your heart so that when you are faced with challenging times and you start to ask “why is this happening?” you can ask “what are You trying to teach me?”
PRAYER: Holy God, thank you for your love. Thank you for making me better. Please help me to keep the proper perspective on this life and understand that it’s all about you and becoming more like your Son, Jesus. In His Holy name I pray. Amen.
POINT TO PONDER: What is God trying to teach me?

The devotional prompts me to share a quote that has inspired me during low spots. It’s a quote of Dixie Fraley whose husband, Robert, died in the airplane crash that took Payne Stewart’s life. She said, “If God subtracted one pain, one heartache, one disappointment from my life, I would be less than the person I am now, less the person God wants me to be, and my ministry would be less than He intends.”
